New Prius Generation Takes Fuel Economy to the Next Level

It’s easy to get wound up over generational differences. For example, Baby Boomers (born around 1945-1960) might think Gen Xers (born around 1961-1980) are lazy slobs who wore flannel for way too long in the 1990s. Similarly, Gen Xers might think Gen Y / Millennials (born 1981-2000) are addicted to their smartphones, and would rather finish a text on the run downtown than stay on the lookout for potholes. And we’re sure Millennials have strong opinions of the still-young Generation Z (born around 2001-present), too; it’s human nature to judge those who are younger than ourselves.

But we’re here to squash the idea, for whoever holds it, that newer generations of vehicles can’t measure up to previous ones. In particular, the environmentally-friendly hybrid class of vehicles has a new generation that will show up its elders in the 2016 Prius line.

Not a “Lost Generation”

The 2016 Toyota Prius will be the fourth generation since the car debuted in the 1990s. The newest Prius models will feature these improvements, to name a few:

More-lightweight hybrid system components
- Electric motor
- Power control unit
- Hybrid battery

Plus, keep in mind the 2015 Prius’ fuel economy is 4.6 litres of fuel consumed per 100 km in the city and 4.9 litres consumed per 100 km highway, and that the 2016 model should see an improvement from those numbers. Plus, the 2016 model will be a little larger than the 2015 model, with a little more passenger room, and it will feature a rejuvenated exterior that promises to be more coupe-like. That’s enough to get your heart racing for the 2016 Prius, isn’t it?

While the Toyota Prius is tops in its class when it comes to hybrid or electric-powered vehicles, and it’s been around since the 1990s, it’s not the first vehicle of its kind. Fred Rogers (aka Mr. Rogers) drove a quirky electric model in a 1981 episode of his TV show and he was able to enjoy the quiet fun that early electric vehicle provided. Heck, it was so fun, he probably sang, “won’t you be mine, won’t you be mine, won’t you be my hybrid.” If he were still alive today, he’d probably invite along other famous “Rogers” like quarterback Aaron Rodgers, musician Roger Waters, actress Mimi Rogers and tennis pro Roger Federer to fill out the remainder of the passenger space.

2016 Prius models are still not yet on dealership lots in Canada, but since the car has already been shown at the annual Frankfurt Motor Show, for example, it should see release in the coming months. When that happens, you can enjoy superior fuel savings and the unmistakable compact design of a 2016 Toyota Prius, and can help preserve the environment in the process.
