Toyota Hybrid Leadership

World Leader in Hybrid Innovation

Why Choose Toyota Hybrids?

Toyota has always been the world leader in hybrid power. Our patented hybrid technology offers an unmatched combination of performance, efficiency, and low emissions. With more hybrids available than any other carmaker, we’ve won the most ecoENERGY Awards in Canada. Since launching the first widely available hybrid in 1997, over 10 million Toyota hybrids have been sold in 80 countries worldwide.

How Toyota Hybrids Work

Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive can operate in electric-mode, gas-mode, or both. A sophisticated energy management system continuously optimizes performance and fuel economy. Regenerative braking converts energy into battery charge every time you decelerate, making the powertrain up to 70% cleaner than conventional engines.

Starting Up

Simply press the Power Button to start your journey — quietly and emission-free. In most cases, only the electric motor is used at start-up, providing instant torque and fuel savings.

Accelerating and Cruising

During acceleration or highway driving, the gas engine and electric motor combine to deliver optimal power and efficiency. Excess energy helps recharge the battery.

Decelerating and Braking

When you slow down or brake, the electric motor takes over, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The regenerative braking system captures energy to recharge the battery.

Resting and Reversing

At a full stop, the gas engine turns off. If needed, it restarts to recharge the battery. While reversing, the electric motor is typically the only one in use, keeping emissions at zero.

Hybrid Facts

Myth: Hybrids Need More Maintenance

Toyota hybrids often require less maintenance. The engines operate less, brakes are regenerative, and there are no alternators, starters, or belts.

Toyota Hybrids vs. Diesel

Modern diesel engines emit nearly three times more smog-forming emissions than Toyota hybrids, making ours among the cleanest on the road.

Low Running Costs

Our hybrids are proven in the real world — taxi fleets across Canada report millions of kilometers with low operating costs and strong fuel savings.

A Battery for Life

More than 99% of Toyota hybrids sold since 2000 still have their original battery. They’re built to last and covered by a 10-year, 240,000 km warranty.
