How to Tell If Your Tire Tread is Too Low

Store Your Tires

Healthy tire tread is essential for safe handling, strong traction, and confident braking, especially in wet or winter conditions. When tread wears down, your vehicle becomes more vulnerable to hydroplaning, longer stopping distances, and poor grip on the road. Fortunately, there are several reliable ways to check whether your tire tread is too low and in need of attention, which the team here at Attrell Toyota has highlighted in the blog below!

The Canadian Quarter Test

For Canadian drivers, slipping a quarter between your tread blocks can help you determine if your tire treads are too low. With the caribou’s nose pointed down, look and see if the nose is still visible after being inserted. If the tread covers its nose, your treads are likely fine. If you can see the nose, your tires are worn and are likely in need of replacement soon.

Use a Tread Wear Bar

Modern tires come equipped with tread wear indicators, also known as wear bars. These narrow, raised sections run across the tread at various points. When the surrounding tread wears down to the same height as the wear bars, it means the tire has reached its minimum safe depth. If the wear bars are clearly visible or flush with the tread, replacement is recommended as soon as possible.

Other Tread Depth Factors

Even if your tire tread depth appears acceptable at first glance, there are other factors to consider. Uneven wear can occur on tires for a variety of reasons, and often indicate a larger issue with the vehicle’s alignment or suspension. Similarly, tire wear can cause noticeable issues with reduced traction or longer braking distances than normal. If these issues are impacting your vehicle, even if the tread depth seems fine in most spots, it’s likely time for a new set of tires.
